James Shepherd moved to Newnan at eight years old and has had a home here ever since. He graduated from Newnan High School before earning his bachelor’s degree in history from the University of Georgia and his Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School.

James has built a career in corporate law, representing technology companies ranging from early-stage startups to established industry leaders. Throughout his practice, he has maintained a strong commitment to pro bono work, primarily fighting for individuals whose civil rights have been violated.

With deep roots in Newnan and a desire to give back to the community that shaped him, James ran for Mayor in 2025. His vision is to manage Newnan’s growth thoughtfully, maintain what makes our city special, and reach out to serve all of Newnan’s citizens with a transparent and responsive city government. He is committed to ensuring that Newnan remains a vibrant, welcoming place where people of all walks of life can put down roots and thrive for generations to come.

James is actively involved in the community beyond his role as Mayor. He is a member of Newnan First United Methodist Church and serves on the boards of the Caring Communities Foundation and the Newnan-Coweta History Center.

James lives in downtown Newnan with his family, where he enjoys being part of the walkable, historic neighborhood in the city he is working to strengthen and expand for all its residents.
